Artist21 is a project of my good friends, the art & community provocateurs Barry Goldberg & Philip Horvath. They host a monthly salon at which I was honored to speak. The catalyst is the question ‘what does being an artist in the 21st century mean to you?’. Emphasis, for me at least, on the ‘to you’: not a sermon or a lecture, but an orchestrated conversation formed around one artist’s impressions. What works for me might not work for the rest of the room - and, thrillingly, it didn’t. During the participatory period of the salon there was some healthy discussion with some angst and ego thrown in for good measure. I recommend attending April’s event (on the 14th), at which the abstract artist Joshua Elias will speak. A transcript of my talk is available on the Artist21 site, and a video of the event should appear soon. Onward.
